Second Saturday – Dec. 2010

December 3rd, 2010

Every Second Saturday, a crowd of people flows through the streets of Breckenridge.  Usually there are familiar facea and new ones.  This time, the new face will be on the gallery side as Soleil Sadler is gracious enough to host Second Saturday.  I hope that you will all come and say ‘hello’.  What is more exciting than my gorgeous sister hosting?  The Breckenridge  Public Art Commission is having an art show!

At the Breckenridge Theatre Gallery, my own artwork will actually be on display, as will the artwork of the other commissioners.  I would urge you not to miss this event as it is the people who decide the public artwork that is on display here in Breckenridge.  Coincidentally, the public artworks are noted on the Second Saturday Gallery Map.  I hope that everyone has fun, and I shall see you in January to confirm that it is.

Tree of Life

November 19th, 2010

It is nearing the Christmas bustle, and I wanted to share about a recent commission from the Teal Art Gallery.  Not too long ago, a lovely gentleman was dining at Ember, and saw the show-stopping piece by Kris Lee (not actually shown in link).  The light, colors, and uniqueness made him call Teal and see if he could get a custom piece for his very large wall.  Of course, Kris and I were very excited to work on the 4 foot by 6 foot piece.  Since it never hung in the gallery, I really wanted to share via blog post.  It is such a beautiful piece.

Pricing Art

September 10th, 2010

I’m sure many people wonder how the art at Teal gets priced. There are definite mistrusts about the subject and it does seem like an awkward question to most people. I hope that this lays your fears and curiosity to rest, so that you can enjoy the art.

Distilled, pricing includes the materials, time and ideas of the artists, the commission for the gallery, and demand for the artist. Beginning with demand, an artist’s career is really similar to a professional athlete’s. An athlete spends the early life learning the skills to be, say, an amazing basketball player. Many, many people play basketball, but only a few have the ambition, skill, or luck to become professional. Similarly, most people have some claim to being an artist whether it be doodling or sculpting.  The job of the gallery is to be the scout and find the ones that are going to be stars.

Why do we need to add a commission in for the gallery? There are several reasons. One is that no one would be able to see any art if the galleries weren’t there to display it. Some art is sold online, but it is hard to get the feeling and details from most art from photographs.   You can compare this for yourself if you look at art on Teal’s website then come in and see it for yourself.  Galleries also host events for people to meet the artists. This might be awkward if it had to be done in an artist’s home. Finally, artists are rarely business people. What does this mean? It means that they spend their time creating and not marketing accounting, publicizing, and planning events. An art gallery is almost like a cooperation of many artists and a gallery in which none of us could live with out the other.

The main factor in pricing art is the art itself. Each artist is in a different place in their careers, so they have a different demand for their art. No one will pay much for the rookie, but everyone would pay alot for Michael Jordan. Of course, you have to like the sport or style of art. I wouldn’t pay a thing for a cricket star, no offense if you are from any other country than the US, I just don’t love cricket. But if art is something you love or something you are discovering, art will enrich your life, no matter who your star player turns out to be.

Teal’s Virtual Facelift

August 12th, 2010

Welcome to the overview of Teal Art Gallery’s virtual facelift.  You may have noticed that the “Artist” page is easier to navigate.  There is something about hosting events here, and the there is a fabulous new background.  As usual, I can’t do any of these things without Ira, Thank you.

So just to elaborate a bit on what is new, you can check out weekly or bi-weekly blurbs about what is going on with Teal.  This is a cool little widget that shows up on the home page.  For example, Second Saturday is this weekend, don’t miss it!  Very exciting.

Did you know that if you click on the Teal Art Gallery Logo, it re-directs you to the Home Page?

This is actually the case for most websites incase you didn’t know.

What happens when you subscribe to the Blog?

This seems like it would be really simple, but many people I have talked to aren’t really sure.  People who subscribe to many blogs might have a Blog Reader (kind of a personalized newspaper).  An easy example of a blog reader is Google Reader.  You can subscribe to your favorite writers, newspapers, experts, or anything else.  The RSS button that usually looks like a dot with two curved radio waves coming out.rss button  This is a very fun feature to read about everything you are interested in.

Definitely something you need to check out is the new Artist Page layout.  Very informative.  If you click on the thumbnails (little pictures) , it shows you almost all of the art I have for each of the artists.  Before, it only showed a sample.  Also, if you click on the next thumbnail, you are brought to a gorgeous slideshow.

I hope that you enjoy this new look.

Ceramics, Painting, and Jazz!

July 26th, 2010

Two wonderful and very different artists are going to be showing with a joint opening here at the Teal Art Gallery.  Mona Fraiman, a jazz musician and painter, will be presenting her textural and colorful artwork with all the Argentinean flair it deserves.  Paul F. Morris, a sculptural ceramicist, completes the show with the organic yet structural, brightly colored, highly textured sculptures.

August 7th Opening Party at 5:00 pm.  Food and entertainment will be abundant!

Mona Fraiman is a charismatic Argentinean singer and painter who will be gracing the Teal Art Gallery with her vocal and painting talents.  Mona embodies a cubist style with her personal additions of texture.  Her pieces range from New Orleans Jazz Fest memories to still-lifes at home.  Come meet her and learn about her art.

Paul Morris is one of the foremost sculptural ceramicists and has been featured in industry related magazines.  You can see why!  His structure is something most ceramicists would die for and his glazes are out of this world.  His finishes range from planned almost tribal accuracy to spontaneous dripping.

Definitely a show you will not want to miss.  The show runs from August 7th through September 6th.

Summer Art Group

July 9th, 2010

Art groups have always been one of my favorite ways to enjoy art.   Working in groups inspires creativity, diversity and camaraderie.  I will never cease to be amazed by the diversity of the results of an art group assignment.  Hopefully this admiration of the ideas and creativity will inspire some people to come to my art group that I will be hosting on Sundays (starting this Sunday, July 11th).

This first class will focus on three dimensional objects.  One of the most successful methods of creating three dimensional objects is called chiaroscuro.  Originating in the Renaissance, chiaroscuro basically is the practice of making three dimensional shapes by using gradients of light to dark.  This adds volume to shapes and can be achieved through smooth gradients, stippling, crosshatching or color variation.

This first class will explore the practice and variations of chiaroscuro that will challenge both beginner and advanced artists.  The classes will cost $40 per person for the five week session. Some materials will be included.  Each class will be about two hours and will expand upon the previous week.  All classes will be held at the idyllic Cup in the Corner, inside Alpine Earth Center, in Silverthorne at 4:30 pm.  Please register or ask questions by calling Stephanie at Teal Art Gallery at 970-453-4020, emailing her at contact@tealartgallery.com or calling the Cup in the Corner at 970-468-4959.

I look forward to a productive and fun summer full of Sunday afternoons.

Ever wondered what makes some of the most famous artists so distinguishable from everyone else?  This class introduces varieties of mark making.  We will be exploring what defines different styles and how you might develop your own style more fully.  Beginning with black and white, we will be exploring many mediums and breaking out of that comfort zone!  Email contact@tealartgallery.com to find out more.

Mona Fraiman – Saturday, August 7

In correlation with this talented artist’s Birthday,  a fantastic art opening is planned.  Along with her cubist – impressionist painting and multimedia art, Mona Fraiman will be gracing us with her jazz singing.
